Evaporative dry eye, the more common form, is usually caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked or underperform, leading to a tear film that breaks down too quickly.

For more persistent cases, punctal plugs (tiny devices inserted into the tear drainage channels to keep tears on the eye surface longer) may be recommended.
